Welcome to my Writings & Articles section... This page has links to various topics and subjects I have an
interest in. Some of these were written for newsletters or journals from several years ago and many are current; I'm always expanded this section with new material.

Photojournals

With this revision I decided to create a separate section for my photojournals. As the list is growing, these will be presented here from the latest first working backward in time.
Some or all of these articles may appear elsewhere in the index under the appropriate sections, but the intent was to isolate them in the event someone wished to view these alone without searching the entire page.
Many, but far from all of my 'daylight' photographs - landscapes and other subjects, can be viewed in these photojournals.

Twenty-four new bird species were added to my Bird Photography Index from this field time. The article also includes numerous photographs on varied subjects from our Texas travels. Check it out!

Southern Photography - More Travels with a Camera

This account, posted in mid-December 2007, consists of photographs taken while I was in Florida, Georgia & South Carolina in September and October 2007.
I was in Savannah for an extended stay and made the most of being away from home when it came to time in the field. This is my most ambitious
account to date produced in three parts by locations (read this as longest) as I had many images taken over two months.

A Weekend on Monhegan Island, Maine

This account, closer to home documents a weekend birding with the cameras ten miles off the Maine coast. We were with some great folks and enjoyed our time.

Yellow-billed Cuckoo

Golden Silk Spider

Photographs from Georgia

This photojournal details more expeditions in Savannah and the surrounding areas. I actually spent a good deal of time imaging in South Carolina,
right across the Savannah River from the City of Savannah on this trip.

A Southern Tour at 400mm

This photojournal documents time in
and around Savannah, Georgia when I was in that area on business. Because I traveled by air, I was limited in my equipment selection, thusly the
Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L was my primary lens employed for photography on this junket. I did have one other lens available but that was the extent of it.
Dragonfly

Atlantic Puffin

Photographing Atlantic Puffins via Harley-Davidson

Just as it reads, this is a journal of a road trip on my motorcycle to Grand Manan in New Brunswick, Canada with the ultimate purpose
of a visit to Machias Seal Island to photograph puffins and other birds. This was an outstanding adventure documented by this account.

Photographing Pelagic Birds at Sea

This account is about a day at sea seeking birds from the vessel Odyssey. It was a productive and interested event sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth.

I also created two 'Special Edition Galleries' from several other trips in Maine waters that I didn't develop into photojournals. These are posted in the 'Bird Photography Index'
or can be noted below. Derek Lovitch put together a half day trip to view terns off Portland Harbor. This Lucky Catch Tern Cruise in early August was conducted in rough water.
The sea was running enough that we nearly turned back but managed in the end to persevere. Another pelagic birding trip was undertaken in mid-August.
Pelagic Birding II documents this time at sea and also has a series of images taken at sunrise.

Birding Evergreen

Evergreen Cemetery in Portland is a great spot for birding during the spring migration. May is the premier month for this activity in Maine and in 2007
I was prepared to take advantage of it. This journal and the next following documents bird walks with local Audubon volunteers and others in out group.

Evergreen Revisited

More birding photographs can be found in this account. The grounds of Evergreen Cemetery include multiple ponds and wooded areas, an ideal environment during the spring migration.
Canada Warbler

Nashville Warbler

Seeking Migrating Warblers in Hinckley Park

This account and the one following documents bird walks with Audubon volunteers during the May 2007 spring migration.
Hinckley Park has many wooded areas and several ponds that can be a real adventure when the birds return to Maine.

Seeking Migrating Warblers in Hinckley Park - Day Two

This May account documents the next day in Hinckley Park with another Audubon group. We had a fun group of birders along to take advantage of the spring migration.
Solitary Sandpiper

Ford Thunderbird

A Morning at the Carlisle Car Show

This journal consists of a group of photographs taken at the Spring Carlisle Collector Car Swap Meet & Corral in Carlisle, Pennsylvania
in April 2007. Cars aren't really a great interest of mine but this was an enjoyable event and I'm pleased I took the time to attend.

My Photographic Exhibit at Casco Bay Frames

This photojournal from February 2007 documents my gallery display at a local frame shop in Portland. I had enough material to make this an
exclusive show of my work and it was noted as the best attended opening at this facility. Peruse the images and you'll see the displays and more...

Photographs From Virginia

We were working in Smithfield, Virginia over time in 2006 and I took advantage to do a lot of photography around
the Pagan River area close to the James. This account with many photographs documents my time in that area.

Backyard Critters

This account documents my earlier attempts when photographing birds and subjects around the house. I like to think my imaging technique and equipment base has improved since I commenced this journal.

Touring Western Newfoundland via Harley-Davidson

This is a journal of our 2005 motorcycle adventure to Newfoundland over road and sea. I've always wanted to visit the Viking
settlement in L'Anse aux Meadows at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsular and this time away was planned around our visit.

Momo Ghostriding the Black Hills

The Camp Hawg Ledger - Sturgis, South Dakota 1995

This account was typed out on paper before I really knew what the internet was all about... Over time I dug out the article and re-formatted it for inclusion on my website. We had a
great time riding the Black Hills and this journal follows the adventure on a day-to-day basis. I've been to Sturgis twice more since 1995 but this is the only account of my travels there.

My Canon Photographic System

This account documents my daylight photographic equipment journey since my entry into the digital age. Included are details of my equipment choices and sample images from my lens set. I am posting this journal last as it remains a work in progress.

War Between the States

Until a few years ago I was active in re-enacting the American Civil War period and took the field often as a Confederate infantryman.
Our group portrayed Company C of the 3rd Arkansas Infantry, which formed a portion of R.E. Lee's vaunted Army of Northern Virginia and
the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery, converted to use as infantry when U.S. Grant took command in 1864.

Several of the articles were written when I was the newsletter editor of 'The Copperhead' in a Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp.
Two represent combined research summaries for my Confederate States Army (CSA) ancestors in the primary branches of my family from South Carolina.
Although it may be difficult to ascertain from the content, these summaries constitute years of research. The genealogical documentation from this
research was used to become a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Military Order of the Stars and Bars.
I also have Union ancestors from Pennsylvania and became a member of the Sons of Union Veterans as well.

Constellations in Mythology

In modern times there are eighty-eight recognized constellations. Forty-eight were known from ancient times and form Ptolemy's original group handed down to our civilization
through the ages. Ptolemy's group is further subdivided into 21 northern, 12 zodiacal & 15 southern constellations. These can still be found on modern maps although in some
instances the boundaries have been altered and many of the names have undergone revision. The Ptolemaic group is steeped in mythology and has held my interest for many years.
If one is to read or study Greek and Roman mythology, you'd be quick to understand there are many interpretations of basic stories that somewhat follow the same premise.
The accounts noted here were formed from my notes and reading when using this information speaking to students and our astronomy club over time. Because I too am a storyteller,
what you read here will be from the versions I selected to impart.
